Back in the old days when City bankers could get 9 holes in before work and play the back 9 before supper, the summer was a quiet time.
To ensure that the natty stockbrokers of that halcyon time didn't do anything to undermine their families' vacations - like getting stressed in the silly season - some wise gentleman (of course it was only men back then) captured the mood in the expression:
